Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that are bonded to the fronts of teeth and can correct stains, chips, cracks, and other imperfections. Porcelain veneers can also be an excellent alternative to more time-consuming orthodontic treatment methods; our dentists in La Jolla can use porcelain veneers as a form of “instant orthodontics” to remedy gaps or the appearance of crooked teeth. At Scripps Center for Dental Care, many of our San Diego-area patients choose to combine porcelain veneers with other smile-enhancing procedures, such as teeth whitening or other cosmetic dentistry options, to achieve full smile makeovers.

The Porcelain Veneers Process

At our office in La Jolla, San Diego, the first step in the porcelain veneers process is a consultation with one of our cosmetic dentists to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure. After making this determination, the dentist will prepare your teeth for the porcelain veneers by filing them down slightly, creating a foundation for more natural-looking and durable veneers. An impression of your teeth will be taken and sent to our master ceramist, who will create beautiful and realistic-looking porcelain veneers that closely match your teeth in shape, color, and size. On a second visit to our office, your porcelain veneers will be gently fitted over the front of your existing teeth, and you will leave with a beautifully restored smile.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth restorations that are fitted over a patient’s natural teeth to provide structural integrity and mask imperfections or tooth damage. At our office in La Jolla, all dental crowns are constructed from high-quality porcelain to closely match the patient’s natural teeth in shape, size, and color. Dental crowns are similar to porcelain veneers in that they are fitted over damaged teeth to correct their appearance. However, dental crowns, also known as caps, fit over the entire original tooth in most cases, while porcelain veneers only cover the front surface. Dental crowns can also be used to provide strength to weakened teeth and to support dental bridges, and they are sometimes placed in conjunction with dental implants for more extensive restorations. If you have damaged teeth and would like to restore a healthier, more youthful appearance to your smile, contact our San Diego office to learn more about dental crowns and see whether they are the dental solution for you.

The Dental Crowns Process

Before one of the dentists at our office can place dental crowns, the patient’s teeth must be filed slightly. This step will create room for the crown to be fitted over the damaged tooth without compromising the positioning of the surrounding teeth. It also makes the surface of the tooth slightly more porous so that the dental crown can properly adhere to it. Sometimes, a patient’s tooth is damaged to such an extent that it is necessary for the dentist to perform a root canal to remove any decay or bacteria before the tooth is sealed with the crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression of it will be taken and sent to our master ceramist, whose specialty is custom-crafting dental crowns to match the patient’s natural teeth. When the restoration is ready, the patient will return to our office in La Jolla to have his or her dental crown placed. With proper care and maintenance, our San Diego patients can enjoy beautiful dental crown work for up to forty years!

All-Porcelain Restorations

At Scripps Center for Dental Care, Dr. Weston and the team know that restorative dentistry is not just about function: restored teeth need to be beautiful as well as strong. For this reason, our dentists use all-porcelain dental crowns and veneers. Unlike traditional metal-based restorations, crowns and veneers constructed from high-quality porcelain never show dark lines at the gum tissue, which can make teeth appear unclean and patients appear older than they are. Furthermore, porcelain veneers and dental crowns are incredibly resilient and will resist staining and cracking. These features mean that our patients in La Jolla and all over San Diego can enjoy beautiful teeth with porcelain dental crowns and veneers for years to come.
