John F. Weston, D.D.S., F.A.A.C.D. - General Dentist
Dr. Weston, owner and director of Scripps Center for Dental Care, earned his dental degree in 1989, graduating as one of the top five in his class. While a commissioned officer in the US Navy, he completed a general practice residency at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego, and served two years independent duty aboard a US Navy Warship in support of Desert Storm.
Dr. Weston is the only dentist in La Jolla and one of only 50 worldwide to earn the rigorous credential of "Accredited Fellow" through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. As a strong advocate of continuing education, he regularly lectures, publishes articles, and teaches hands-on courses to other dentists on all aspects of cosmetic dentistry on a local and international level. He has also served two terms as a chairman of the Professional Education Committee for the AACD's annual Scientific Session.
Dr. Weston is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Diego County Dental Society. In addition to being a fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, he also holds an elected position to the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry, where he serves as fellowship and accreditation examiner. He has been practicing in the La Jolla area since 1989 with a focus in cosmetic smile design using non-metal restorations.
Dr. Weston is an avid sportsman who enjoys kite boarding, surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, boating, and scuba diving.

Nicholas C. Marongiu, D.D.S – General Dentist “Dr Nick”
Dr. Nick graduated from the University of California, San Diego, with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience. He earned his Doctorate from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry where he served as President of the Dental Student Association and Chair of the California Dental Association Student Delegation. He graduated with Honors in Implant Dentistry and was recipient of several awards, most notably, Clinical Excellence Award, Student Excellence Award, Prosthodontic Scholar Award, and Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry Award.
Following graduation, He completed a General Practice Residency at the West Los Angeles Wadsworth Veterans Association Hospital and post graduate training at University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry. During his residency he provided comprehensive dental care to Veterans and earned licensure for intravenous conscious sedation.
Dr. Nick is very involved with community service, loaning his expertise and training to Missions of Mercy, USNS Mercy, Flying Docs, Project Hope and several other organizations that provide dental care to underserved communities in North America, Central America, and Southeast Asia.
Dr Nick is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Orange County Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Los Angeles Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and San Diego County Dental Society.
He grew up in northern California and currently resides in San Diego. Nick's active outdoor lifestyle includes hiking, camping, surfing, scuba diving, swimming, biking, and running.
Evan S. Gold, D.M.D, M.D.
Born and raised in Staten Island, New York City, Dr. Gold completed his undergraduate studies at Stonybrook University. He then attended The University of Pennsylvania where he obtained his doctor of dental medicine degree. Dr. Gold is a California licensed physician as well, completing his MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland, Dr. Gold completed an internship in general surgery and combined residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He then studied abroad at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia gaining valuable experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
After spending several winters in Cleveland during residency, Dr. Gold and his family decided they wanted to live in a warmer climate so San Diego North County has been a welcomed change. Dr. Gold has been practicing in San Diego County since 2003. Patient comfort and safety are most important and he makes every effort to accommodate patients and keep their experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible. One of the ways he accomplishes this is by performing in-office general anesthesia, for which he received training in a hospital setting similar to an anesthesiologist. Dr Gold holds a general anesthesia permit from the Dental Board of California
Dr. Evan Gold is board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery and maintains staff privileges at Scripps Encinitas Hospital. He belongs to numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental and Medical Associations, American Society of Dental Anesthesiology, San Diego County Dental Society, and Academy of Osseointegration. He is also a guest faculty member with American Board of Aesthetic Medicine. He has authored numerous journal articles and has lectured to dentists and other professional groups.
Dr Gold is active in his community and supports many local charitable organizations. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, is an avid golfer, and aspiring drummer.
John R. Jerome, D.D.S.
Dr. Jerome graduated from California State University, Northridge, with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry where he served in numerous leadership positions. He graduated with Honors and was the recipient of several awards, most notably, The American Association of Oral Biologists Award, Pierre Fauchard Academy Award, Garrett Newkirk Memorial Award, and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Donald C. Curnutte Memorial Scholarship.
Upon graduation, Dr. Jerome was commissioned in the United States Navy and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and served two years as a dental officer at the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for 7 months to Camp Fallujah.
Dr. Jerome then returned to the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and completed a three-year advanced training program in Orthodontics earning his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Jerome is actively involved in his professional community and is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society, American Association of Orthodontics, Pacific Society of Orthodontics, San Diego County Dental Society, and the San Diego Academy of Orthodontists.
He grew up in Southern California and resides in San Diego with his wife, Sarah, of 17 years and their 4 year old son JJ. In his free time he loves to play tennis or spend time outdoors with his family.
Katherine Thomson, D.D.S.
Dr. Thomson is a San Diego native and obtained her Endodontic specialty training at the University of Southern California, where she held the title of Chief Resident. Dr. Thomson obtained her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry, with special recognition in restorative dentistry. She then went on to complete a Hospital Based General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California. Shortly after, she returned back to San Diego and practiced as a general dentist, providing comprehensive dental care to our community for over eight years.
Dr. Thomson is a third generation San Diegan with heavy ties to the community. she grew up in Bonita and attended the University of California San Diego where she obtained her Bachelors in Biochemistry and Masters in Chemistry. Her time spent at UCSD has given her a broad breadth of experiences, including time at two of our most distinguished research institutions: Salk Institute and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Dr. Thomson resides in La Jolla with her husband and two children. She enjoys participating in many outdoor activities including water sports, hiking, cycling, and coaching her sons in soccer.
Dr. Thomson is actively participating in post graduate courses and continues to be adjunctive faculty in Endodontics at USC School of Dentistry and USC continuing education courses. In addition, she has been a lecturer at USC to the pre-doctoral students in Endodontics. Dr. Thomson is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and San Diego County Dental Society. Currently, Dr. Thomson continues to participate in research at USC and is scheduled to present her work for publication this spring.
Anthony J. Opilka, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Opilka received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Science degrees from the University of Illinois. After 6 years practicing as a general dentist, he completed a demanding 3-year periodontics residency at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD (at the President's Hospital) and achieved Diplomate status (Board certification) in the American Board of Periodontology in 2002.
Dr. Opilka was on staff at the Periodontics Naval Postgraduate Dental School from 2006-2009 where he mentored periodontics residents. He is an educator as well and has given numerous lectures on the many clinical techniques he has mastered over the years. Throughout his career as a Naval Officer, he was honored to treat many of the Navy's VIP's including pilots o Marine One (the President's Helicopter).
Dr. Opilka believes in the ultimate comfort for his patients and is certified to provide both oral and IV conscious sedation. He specializes in surgical placement of dental implants, gum grafting, and gum reshaping for esthetic enhancement. He works very closely with his restorative team to create outstanding cosmetic outcomes for his patients under his care.
Dr. Opilka is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, Academy of Osseointegration, San Diego County Dental Society, American Society of Dental Anesthesiology, and California Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Opilka enjoys golf and playing guitar. He and his wife have two children and they enjoy boarding, swimming, and discovering great food.
Robert L. Bosworth, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Bosworth specializes in comprehensive tooth replacement systems and works closely with all our dental specialists to coordinate complex restorations and rehabilitation. He earned his Doctorate at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. As a commissioned officer in the US Navy, he completed a General Practice Residency at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. In 1999 he began his Prosthodontic residency at the Navy Postgraduate School of Dentistry in Bethesda, MD. The rigorous three year residency included all aspects of prosthodontic care, including complete and partial dentures, crowns, bridges, implant dentistry, and dental laboratory science. He completed his residency in 2002, earning a Masters degree in Health Sciences from George Washington University, D.C. and his certificate in Prosthodontics. Dr. Bosworth served 12 years in the Navy including an independent sea tour on a US Navy warship, two years in Japan, and two years with 1st Marines. Dr. Bosworth's last tour with thte Navy was at the world's largest naval base in Norfolk, VA where he served as Head of the Prosthodontic Department, Chairman of the Implant Board, and Prosthodontic instructor for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency.
Dr. Bosworth is a member of the American College of Prosthodontics, the Academy of Osseointegration (the leading dental implant organization worldwide) and the American Dental Association. HE is also a graduate of the California Implant Institute in La Jolla, CA.
Dr. Bosworth and his wife Emily, have three young children. They enjoy sailing, hiking, biking, and the beautiful San Diego beaches.
Penelope Mulligan, R.D.H., B.S.
Penelope Mulligan is a native Texan and has resided in San Diego since 2008. She began her college education at the University of Northern Texas studying Biology and Kinesiology. She then obtained her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Texas A&M?Baylor College of Dentistry, located in Dallas, Texas.
During her attendance at Texas A&M, Penelope traveled under school sponsorship to various rural areas of Mexico, Indian Reservations in Oklahoma, Texas Denton State School (under the auspices of Dept. of Aging and Disability Services), Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (a pediatric orthopedic hospital), and she worked extensively with HIV/AIDS patients from the Nelson Tebedo Clinic in Dallas, Texas.
In 2007 with over ten years practicing as a Dental Hygienist, Penelope was hired by the prominent firm Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals (OraPharma) as a Hygiene Educator. Her role was to educate and present clinical information on chemotherapeutic agent to Dental Hygiene programs in universities and corporate/private practices. She has retained her position since her move to Southern California where we are happy to have her as a part of our team.
Penelope is also an avid continuing education attendee. She enjoys seeking out methods to improve the comprehensive care she provides to patients by using new and innovative techniques (i.e. Lasers, Chemotherapeutic Agents), products and philosophies. She is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association and the San Diego County Dental Hygiene Society.
She enjoys music, reading, her friends and outdoor activities, and is a fanatical sports fan! She has traveled extensively throughout Europe, parts of South America and remote areas of the Caribbean. Not surprising when you meet Penelope, she was voted Social Chairperson in her class.
Loree Oberle-Edwards, R.D.H., M.S., D.D.
Loree Oberle-Edwards received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene in 1975 and her Master of Science degree in Oral Biology in 1977 at the University of California, San Francisco. She has received a Doctorate of Divinity in 2002. She has served in several professional organizations including the American Dental Hygienists' Association, International Society of Oral Oncology, and Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer Society since 1978. A teacher, as well as student, Loree incorporates recent advances in oral care and uses leading technologies. She has authored and co-authored in several professional peer-reviewed publications/journals.
Loree has been an employee at Scripps Clinic since 1978, practicing in the Department of Oral Medicine until its conversion to Scripps Center for Dental Care in 1988. Loree Specializes in the oral care and management of patients with medical conditions including diabetes, heart problems, prostheses, blood disorders, autoimmune disease; patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, and those with anxiety or "dental phobias'. Loree focuses on total body care and supports patients in achieving optimal oral health as well as the ability to enjoy physical and emotional well being. Having extended training, Loree's "healing touch" is enjoyed by patients as well as staff.
A native of San Diego, Loree continues to live in this beautiful city with her husband Cliff and her cats, Shanti and Athena. She trained in Tang Soo Do Karate with her husband and holds a 1st degree black belt in this traditional martial art. She also enjoys travel and reading.
Andrea Morrison, R.D.H.
Andrea Morrison is a native of east-central Illinois. She received her Degree in Dental Hygiene from Parkland College, Champaign, Illinois graduating with honors and was in the top five percent for clinical and academic achievement. She obtained accreditation and holds licensure via Central Regional Board, the Western Regional Board, and the California State Board. Andrea has traveled and practiced in the Colorado, Arizona, and California and really feels at home in San Diego. She enjoys the multi-specialty aspect of practicing at Scripps Center for Dental Care and has found it very rewarding to work with our quality cosmetic dentists and certified specialists.
Andrea prides herself on the unique ability to cater to each individual's specific dental needs, taking into consideration the patient's personal values, goals, and challenges. She equally enjoys working with patients of all ages and finds personal satisfaction by providing high qality oral therapy with a careful professional touch. Her enthusiasm for a dental hygiene career has been propelled by the connection between her interest in the evoution of dental technology and new developments in dentistry. One therapy Andrea has become proficient with is using Lasers in combination with traditional techniques. She finds that using the latest information and equipment greatly enhances her patients' health and dental experience.
Andrea has also explored other business ventures including fitness training, fitness modeling, and co-owning and managing a sport nutrition retail store for three years. She enjoys being physically fit and maintains her health by practicing yoga, weight training, and most outdoor recreational activities including travel and culinary art.
