Direct Freehand Bonding
Composite Fillings
Smile Design
At Scripps Center for Dental Care in La Jolla, our cosmetic dentistry specialists are proud to offer freehand bonding to our patients as a treatment option. Bonding is a process involving the use of composite resin filling materials to improve the color and shape and treat rotations and fractures of the front teeth. This process can normally be performed in one visit without the use of a dental laboratory or temporary restorations.
Due to advances in materials, the results of direct freehand bonding can be very realistic and exhibit incredible shine and lifelike colors. Advantages of this type of cosmetic care include less extensive tooth preparations, instant results, total control of shade and shape, and reduction in cost because no lab fees are generated. Among the limitations is a lack of long-term durability; restorations completed with direct freehand bonding last only about half as much time as porcelain veneers and other restorations do. Direct freehand bonding is an excellent option for patients who are younger or those who feel that other options cost more than they can comfortably afford.
Our leader in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. John Weston, is widely recognized for his artistic and technical skill with respect to direct freehand bonding and has earned a reputation for the consistently beautiful transformations he has completed with this procedure. At Scripps Center for Dental Care in San Diego, our certified cosmetic dentistry specialists provide only the most modern and aesthetically-pleasing treatments to our patients. This commitment is the reason why we only place composite (tooth-colored) fillings and have eliminated metal, amalgam fillings from our practice.
Not only are composite fillings much more natural-looking than traditional amalgam fillings, but they also are significantly healthier for the patient. Amalgam fillings are customarily composed of mercury, which is highly toxic. During chewing, small amounts of mercury may be released into the body, a process that some studies have shown increases mercury levels in the brain and other vital organs. Furthermore, amalgam fillings are more sensitive to temperature change than composite fillings are and can expand with time. This phenomenon causes teeth to break, creating the need for more extensive restorations.
Composite fillings are also more aesthetically pleasing than amalgam in that they are formulated to match the rest of the patients’ teeth closely. The resin material used in composite fillings actually bonds to the structure of the treated tooth, providing greater support and stronger restorations than are possible with amalgam. Furthermore, because composite fillings bond with the actual teeth, there is no room for decay to form, which can be a problem with mercury or metal fillings. Composite fillings also wear better and last longer than amalgams.
If you would like to have your amalgam fillings replaced with more up-to-date and safer composite resin, contact our La Jolla cosmetic dentistry office.

Our San Diego smile design team can use procedures such as teeth whitening and direct freehand bonding to restore a brilliant glow to teeth, while porcelain veneers may be used to correct any alignment, shape, or sizing issues. We can also employ dental implants or even Invisalign® orthodontics to ensure that you are thrilled with every aspect of your smile.
During your initial visit to our office in San Diego for a smile design, Dr. Weston will mock up a new smile as it will appear in your actual mouth. This “cosmetic preview" is created with the use of digital dental imaging and is an invaluable step that will allow you to view the proposed changes before treatment begins. Impressions of the design will also act as guides for the fabrication of your provisional restorations and will serve as precise communication tools for the master lab ceramist who will construct your restorations. Once the components of your new smile are all ready, you will return to our office to have them placed. Because we use the latest in sleep dentistry technology, our patients can relax in comfort while we perform multiple procedures in just one office visit. The result is that your smile design could be complete in just a few sessions!
