La Jolla, San Diego Dental Anxiety Solutions: Sedation and Sleep Dentistry

Is fear of dentistry keeping you from taking care of your teeth?

Do you have a psychological or physical disorder that prevents you from pursuing needed dental treatment?

For those with troubling dental fears, Scripps Center for Dental Care offers a full range of anesthesia options at our La Jolla, San Diego office, including oral conscious sedation and IV sleep dentistry.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For our patients who wish to remain conscious during treatment, Scripps Center for Dental Care is proud to offer a safe and reliable technique for making your dental visits completely comfortable and relaxing without putting you to sleep. Thanks to special training by the well recognized DOCS (Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation) society, we can offer an alternative to IV sedation and general anesthesia that involves the use of mild oral sedatives and is known as oral conscious sedation.

How Oral Conscious Sedation Works

At our office in La Jolla, San Diego, sedation dentistry begins when Dr. John Weston or another qualified doctor administers a small, custom-prescribed pill shortly before his or her treatment. Soon after swallowing the pill, the patient eases into an anxiety-free state. Our patients who undergo sedation dentistry remain aware of their surroundings and yet feel calm and relaxed throughout their time in the treatment chair.

Many of our patients find that sedation dentistry allows them to undergo dental treatments and procedures they would have never before been able to tolerate. Sedation dentistry is an especially promising alternative for our younger patients or for people whose dental anxiety may only be exacerbated by the use of numbing injections or IV sedation. If you live in the La Jolla area or elsewhere in San Diego and are interested in learning more about sedation dentistry, contact us today.

IV Sedation Sleep Dentistry

At our San Diego practice, IV sedation sleep dentistry allows patients to undergo one or more procedures while they remain totally unconscious of any anxiety, fear, or discomfort. We achieve this effect by using intravenous medication to lull the patient into a deep and untroubled sleep for the duration of the treatment. At Scripps Center for Dental Care, we use the most state-of-the-art monitoring equipment available to ensure that our patients are always safe and comfortable, and all of our anesthesiology is administered by board-certified dental anesthesiologists.

IV Sedation Dentistry Applications and Benefits

For our patients, a typical sleep dentistry visit may include deep cleanings, general restorative care, and multi-specialty treatments such as gum surgery, root canal therapy, and oral surgery (including the placement of dental implants). We select anesthesia techniques to fit each individual's needs and desires. At our office, sleep dentistry anesthesia is administered by Dr. Roger S. Kingston, who has pursued extensive continuing education in this field and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology.
